RESUMÉ
GERALDO MEDEIROS-NETO, M.D., FACP
|
Dr.
Medeiros-Neto was born in 1936 and graduated from the University of Sao
Paulo Medical School in 1959.
After receiving a fellowship in Nuclear Medicine (Hospital das Clinicas)
and the James Picker Foundation Clinical and Research Fellowship at the
Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, in 1963
and 1964.
Dr. Medeiros-Neto became assistant Professor of Medicine in 1965 at the
University of Sao Paulo Medical School.
He received his doctorate in Medicine in 1967 and was appointed Professor
of Medicine (University of Sao Paulo School)
in 1973.
Since 1965, Dr. Medeiros-Neto has served as head of Thyroid Laboratory
at the University of Sao Paulo Medical School' Hospital das Clinicas.
His research has been in the area of endemic goiter and cretinism, thyroid
dishormonogenesis, nutritional and growth disorders.
Dr. Medeiros-Neto has published over 210 papers in several national and
international journals and authored or
co-authored 10 books on Thyroid Disease and Nutrition Disorders.
He is also editor of "Frontiers in Thyroidology" published by Plenum
Press, New York (1986) containing the papers presented at the 9th International
Thyroid Congress.
Contributed with chapters to leading text books such as DeGroot's "Endocrinology"
and Ingbar & Braverman
"The Thyroid".
Member of key Endocrine and Thyroid Societies in the USA, ASIA, EUROPE
and LATIN AMERICA,.
Dr. Medeiros-Neto has received several prizes for this research work including
the International LATS award of 1980.
He was one of the founders and served as its first President of
the Latin American Thyroid Society in 1974-1978, and was Organizer
for the 9th International Thyroid Congress that was held in Sao
Paulo (1985). With R. Maciel and A. Halpern edited "Iodine Deficiency
Disorders and Congenital Hypothyroidism", Aché, 1986.
He joined in 1985, the Executive Committee of the International Council
for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders - (ICCIDD).
Was indicated as Professor Adjunct of the University of Miami, Department
of Medicine (1986). Admitted as Fellow of the American College
of Physicians (1986).
Editor of the book "Obesity, a new Metabolic Frontier" (1987).
President of the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity (1987)
and Chairman of the Board (1989). Member of the Council of the International
Association for the Study of Obesity (1987-1990).
Member of the editorial Board of leading medical journals in his specialty
such as "The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism", "Journal
of Endocrinological Investigation", "Thyroid" and "Arch Bras Endocr and
Metab".
Was elected Governor of the American College of Physicians Affiliate
Region of Brazil (1991-1995).
President of the V Latin American Thyroid Congress (1991).
Visiting Professor at the University of Miami, Dept. of Medicine
in February, 1992-1994.
Elected Member of the Academy of Medicine (Sao Paulo) in
June 1992. Elected as Director of the "Academia de Medicina de São Paulo"
in August 1993.
Published the book "Inherited disorders of the thyroid system",
CRC Press, 1994.
Visiting Professor and Lecturer, University of Chile, Santiago, 1995.
Received the prize "ACADEMIA DE MEDICINA" 1995 and the "Paul
Starr Award"(American Thyroid Association) in 1996.
Organizer and chairman of the International Symposium on Thyroid Nodules
(1997) and the 4th International Workshop on Resistance to Thyroid
Hormone (1999).
Organizer and President of the 9th International Congress on Obesity
(9th ICO) held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 2002.Editor: "Progress in Obesity
Research 9 9, 2003".
